Hosted by the UCLA Extension College Counseling program, In Conversation With... is our summer webinar series, bringing together college admissions professionals, thought leaders, and experts in the college counseling field.

Each hour-long live webinar is led by one of our College Counseling certificate program instructors as they discuss current trends in college admissions with each of our distinguished guests.

At the end of each discussion, you will have time to ask questions and engage in a lively discussion with our panelists.

This free series is part of UCLAxOpen, a no-cost personal enrichment and professional development initiative offered via UCLA Extension.

Phil Moreno
NACAC Chair-elect

Phil Moreno is a first-generation college student from California's Inland Empire and associate director of college counseling at The Nueva School in San Mateo, CA. Before joining Nueva in 2022, Phil worked in college admissions for more than eighteen years at the University of Redlands and most recently Dickinson College, where he was regional director of admission. A sought-after speaker in college admissions, Phil previously served as president of the Western Association for College Admission Counseling (WACAC), and Treasurer for the Regional Admission Counselors of California. He is currently chair-elect of the Board for the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC).

Interviewed by College Counseling instructor Dr. Esther Hugo, Mr. Moreno will discuss mental health, learning loss, and grade inflation. Also, Mr. Moreno will address the impact of SCOTUS and FAFSA on this year's college decisions.

Dr. Esther Hugo holds a doctorate in Educational Leadership from UCLA and a Master’s in Counseling from Loyola Marymount University. Dr. Hugo is one of the first online instructors in the UCLA College Counseling Certificate Program; in 2008 she won the Distinguished Instructors Award. Dr. Hugo serves as the inter-association chair for the Western Association for College Admission Counseling, a position she created to foster collaboration among like-minded organizations. In addition, she is past president of the Western Association for College Admission Counseling and has twice served on the NACAC Board of Directors. Most recently, Dr. Hugo published a chapter in the 6th edition of the NACAC book "Fundamentals of College Counseling", which won a national award.

Jon Boeckenstedt
Vice Provost of Enrollment Management at Oregon State University

Jon Boeckenstedt is the Vice Provost of Enrollment Management at Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon, where he has been since July 2019.  

This year marks Mr. Boeckenstedt's 40th year in enrollment management and admissions, and his experience has taken him to a wide range of colleges and universities. He has a special interest in data visualization and the appropriate application of corporate strategy to higher education. His admission work has taken him to 40 states and eleven countries outside the US, and his writing has appeared in The Washington Post, The Chronicle of Higher Education, Slate Magazine, and The Academic Impressions website.

Mr. Boeckenstedt has presented at regional and national conferences across the country for organizations such as NACAC, NASFAA, and AACRAO.

Interviewed by Dr. Jeff Neill, Mr. Boeckenstedt will discuss the test-optional movement and explore the focus on hyper-selective (highly rejective) universities.

Dr. Jeff Neill has over 23 years of experience working as a school counselor in six different high schools on four continents.  With previous stays in the USA, Taiwan, and Senegal, he currently serves as the Director of College Counseling at Graded—The American School of Sao Paulo, Brazil. He is a member of the International ACAC Professional Development Committee. Dr. Neill is a faculty member at the College Board’s Summer Institute for International Counselors and sits on the College Board’s, Cialfo’s, and Times Higher Education’s (THE-BMI) international advisory boards.

Akil Bello
Test-preparation expert; Sr. Director at FairTest

Akil Bello is a supplemental education and test-preparation expert with almost three decades of experience, currently serving as senior director of advocacy and advancement at FairTest. Mr.Bello was the founding partner and CEO of Bell Curves, a test preparation company where he worked extensively to build community partnerships and programs. As an active member in his community, Mr. Bello continues to support families, schools, and organizations by providing workshops on test preparation and achieving educational success with limited resources. A national presence in educational access and advocacy, he is frequently quoted in the press, a contributor for Forbes, and was featured in two documentaries, The Test and The Art of Thinking and Netflix’s Operation Varsity Blues: The College Admissions Scandal. A highly sought-after speaker, Akil has recently delivered keynote addresses for the 2019 IACAC conference, 2021 CACRAO conference, and the 2023 Just Equations “The Mathematics of Math” Conference.

Interviewed by Yetunde Daniels Rubinstein, Mr. Bello will address the myths that fuel admissions misinformation and derail sound decision-making.


Yetunde Daniels Rubinstein is an instructor in the College Counseling Certificate program at UCLA Extension. Ms. Rubinstein is the founder and principal consultant of Arising Educational Consultants. Ms. Rubinstein's teaching, learning, and education approach is heavily influenced by her life experiences as an immigrant, DI athlete, US Army military veteran, and parent. She is dedicated to impacting systematic and permanent change as a cultural competence practitioner offering novel solutions to old problems. She earned her B.A. in psychology and M.Ed. in personnel counseling and personnel services. She is a doctoral candidate working toward her Ed.D. at the University of San Francisco.

Peter Van Buskirk
Author, popular speaker; Founder & President of Best College Fit

A 25-year veteran of the college admission process, Peter Van Buskirk is dedicated to helping families find student-centered solutions in college planning. His ability to interpret and personalize a complex, and often mysterious, college-going process makes him a popular speaker among students, parents and educators. A graduate of Bucknell University, Peter moved through the ranks at Franklin & Marshall College to become Dean of Admission, Interim Director of Athletics, and Executive Officer in the Office of the Provost. He subsequently created Best College Fit to provide student-centered solutions in the college planning process.

Interviewed by Cyndy McDonald, Mr. Van Buskirk will engage in a frank conversation exploring future college admissions practices. Peter will introduce a student-centered approach to finding the right colleges to apply to. This includes five elements of a "best fit" that parents, students and counselors can use to help students find the place best suited for them after high school graduation.

Cyndy McDonald has thirty years of experience as a high school and middle school counselor, working with Title 1 schools in Central California. With a passion for helping students access higher education, Ms. McDonald helped found an AVID program, an outreach program for first generation, under-represented students; Cyndy McDonald is also the founder of Higher Education Consultants Association (HECA). She has served on several boards/organizations, including National Association for College Admissions (NACAC), Western Association for College Admissions (WACAC), American Institute of Certified Educational Planners (CEP), Coalition for Access, Affordability and Success (the Coalition Application), Higher Education Consultants Association (HECA), Independent Educational Consultants Association (IECA), and National College Advocacy Group (NCAG).
