CEUs vs Academic Units

Our custom programs can be designed to offer either Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for professional development, or Academic Units (AUs) for academic credit.

Continuing Education Units

CEUs represent a non-graded method of measuring professional level education. These educational opportunities are designed to further the objectives of professionals in their fields. Grades are not issued for CEU-bearing courses in accordance with standards established by the International Association of Continuing Education and Training. Students who satisfactorily participate are awarded 1 CEU for every 10 contact hours of instruction. All custom programs are eligible for CEUs.

Academic Units

Courses taught for credit are eligible for AUs. Student work is evaluated by the instructor using letter grades, and the grade and the academic credit (measured in units attempted) will appear on the student transcript. Students must receive a passing grade from the instructor in order to qualify for academic credit. Only courses previously approved by UCLA campus are eligible for AUs. These credit-bearing courses are often transferrable to other universities. This option is not available for UCLA Extension 800-series courses.
