  • Understand the basic institutions of American government: Congress, Presidency, courts, and bureaucracy
  • Distinguish between political ideologies and approaches to studying American politics
  • Analyze the influence of institutions and the constitution on civil rights and civil liberties
  • Analyze different methods of political participation: voting, lobbying, and interest group affiliation

About this course:

This course surveys basic institutions and processes of democratic politics. Instruction covers constitutionalism, representation, participation, and leadership, coupled with particular emphasis on the American case. The course also examines the provisions and principles of the U.S. Constitution, American political culture, and democratic participation in the United States. Students debate contemporary political and constitutional issues by applying the principles and theories presented in class and in assigned readings. Transferable for UC credit.
