About this course:

Over 5000 years ago humans began to consume chocolate. Chocolate may conjure up images of candy bars and bon bons, but throughout much of its history, chocolate was a bitter beverage, not a sweet, rich-tasting treat. In this course we explore chocolate’s history, culture and economics from its origins to the present in four world regions where it is grown and/or produced.  We also sample chocolates from these regions: Upper Amazon and Mesoamerica, Asia and Pacific islands, Europe and Africa, and the United States and Canada.
