In this course, we examine the history of modern China from the death of Mao Zedong to the ascent of Xi Jinping in 2013 and later. We explore the challenges and fateful decisions leaders have faced as they have tried to navigate economic restructuring, greater openness, and disastrous demographic problems—even as China has emerged as one of the most dynamic and consequential countries in the 21st century. This course will be recorded. Students will have access to videos for the duration of the course.
