"Loneliness is the feeling of being alone, regardless of the amount of social contact. Social isolation is a lack of social connections. Social isolation can lead to loneliness in some people, while others can feel lonely without being socially isolated." (CDC, 2021)

Over half of UCLA Extension students tested high for loneliness. This section includes resources to help you understand the signs and symptoms of chronic loneliness, risk factors, and finding treatment and support.

Homesickness, culture shock, sleeplessness, and financial distress can increase your sense of isolation in a new place.
