Osher (50+). In this course, we explore the significant religious influences that shaped American identity from the British colonial period to the American Civil War.
In this course, we explore the significant religious influences that shaped American identity from the British colonial period to the American Civil War. We examine key religious movements and ideas, their socio-political impacts, and the role of religion in shaping early American attitudes and policies, including religious tolerance, separation of church and state, and slavery. Participants will gain an understanding of how religious diversity and revivalism influenced the development of American society and contributed to the ideological foundations of the American Revolution and the Civil War. This course uses the Hybrid format which allows students to participate remotely and/or in the classroom. This course will be recorded. Students will have access to videos for the duration of the course.
