About this course:

When viewing a painting, we generally focus on the person or persons in the image—the facial expressions, who the people were, and what the artist was trying to convey about the sitters. But portraits also include information that can be gleaned from a painting, adding depth and meaning to fabrics, jewelry, furniture, lighting, and even the arrangement of objects in the background. In this course, we explore interiors throughout art history, unlocking different meanings—not just as a backdrop to portraiture, but as important architectural and decorative elements, reflecting the interior fashions of the time. This course will be recorded. Students will have access to the video for 30 days.
