What you can learn.

  • Make weekly progress on your novel draft, with a goal of writing 50 pages
  • Workshop novel excerpts in a supportive, collaborative environment
  • Learn about novel structure from a variety of sources
  • Develop and refine your own creative writing practice

About this course:

Armed with your overall concept and first chapter, you continue to develop your knowledge of craft by writing scenes using characters and situations from the projected novel and workshopping your in-progress work. Mini-lectures on the art of the novel, intuitive creative process and conventional vs. non-conventional approaches to novel structure also are covered. The goal is to complete 50 pages of your novel.

WRITING X 411.1 Novel I or comparable workshop experience.

This online course is conducted through Canvas, a secure website that allows students to log in to access lectures, discussions, and other course materials on demand. There are no required live class meetings. Each course is structured with weekly assignments and deadlines. Lectures and coursework are accessible throughout the week. Workshops are conducted in writing via discussion boards with your instructor and classmates.
